Dear colleagues,
Today is World Contraception Day! Contraceptive information and services are fundamental to the health and human rights of all individuals.
Join the WHO Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research, including the UN Special Research Programme HRP, in celebrating some of the key activities, achievements and partnerships of the past year which are improving sexual and reproductive health and rights for all – in spite of overwhelming health system challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Help amplify important messages by:
Country partners – The WHO Family Planning Accelerator project supports Ministries of Health and partners in 14 countries to improve access to quality and rights-based family planning services. Recent activities include:
IBP Network – With over 80 member organizations, the IBP Network convenes partners to share best practices, experiences and tools to support family planning and reproductive health programming. Activities focus on supporting knowledge exchange, documentation, and implementation research efforts. 600 people attended the recent virtual WHO/IBP Partners Meeting, and here are five lessons learned from implementation stories gathered by IBP Network and Knowledge SUCCESS this year:
Digital health – COVID-19 has accelerated the rise of digital health, and digital tools and platforms have been important in WHO and HRP work on contraception this year – strengthening the collaboration of partners unable to meet face-to-face, and ensuring family planning is prioritized in WHO’s SMART Guideline approach to global guidance in the digital age:
Social accountability – The WHO and HRP Community and Provider driven Social Accountability Intervention (CaPSAI) Project examines how a social accountability process in the context of family planning contraceptive uptake and use, in Ghana and Tanzania. Social accountability interventions aim to propel change by raising community voices and holding duty bearers accountable for delivering on rights and entitlements. The continuing burden of unmet need for family planning and contraceptives (FP/C) services and information remains a challenge, and social accountability interventions are an emerging approach to complex social change.
Learn more about CaPSAI’s:
Building the evidence base – As the main instrument within the United Nations system for research in human reproduction, HPR has a unique mandate. On World Contraception Day, do read and share the most recent publication below. You can also catch up on journal articles published by WHO and HRP on issues around contraception and SRHR here.

COVID Behaviors Dashboard
COVID
Behaviors Dashboard: This new interactive tool
The COVID Behaviors Dashboard visualizes data from the COVID-19 Trends and Impact Survey (CTIS), launched by Facebook with the Delphi Group at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Maryland Social Data Science Center. Insights and analyses on how to use the data were written by researchers and social and behavior change communication experts at CCP in collaboration with WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network. This site is intended to be used by policy makers, health officials and practitioners at national and subnational levels to better understand the behavioral drivers behind vaccine uptake, masking and physical distancing among other behaviors that affect the spread of COVID-19.
Data from this ongoing survey is collected daily and the dashboard is updated every two weeks. More information on the survey, methodology and visuals can be found here.

New article: Impact of Outbreaks on Sexual and Reproductive Health Services: Proposed Frameworks for Pre-, Intra-, and Postoutbreak Situations
Dear colleagues Hope you are staying well and keeping safe. Sharing a new article that just got published.
Syed Khurram Azmat, Moazzam Ali, Fahad Javaid Siddiqui, Syed Farhan Ali Tirmizi, James Kiarie. Scoping Review on the Impact of Outbreaks on Sexual and Reproductive Health Services: Proposed Frameworks for Pre-, Intra-, and Postoutbreak Situations. BioMed Research International (IF3.411), Pub Date : 2021-09-08, DOI: 10.1155/2021/9989478 Access the article at: https://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/2021/9989478/
Summary Introduction. Recent experiences from global outbreaks have highlighted the severe disruptions in sexual and reproductive health services that expose women and girls to preventable health risks. Yet, to date, there is no review studying the possible impact of outbreaks on sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Methodology. Studies reporting outbreaks impacting sexual and reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes were identified using MEDLINE, Embase, and ISI-WoS. Reported impacts were reviewed at systems, community, and legislative levels. Results. The initial run listed 4423 studies; the 37 studies that met all inclusion criteria were mainly from Latin America and Africa. Studies on outbreaks of diseases like Zika and Ebola have documented declines in facility-based deliveries, contraceptive use, and antenatal and institutional care due to burdened healthcare system. Service usage was also impacted by a lack of trust in the healthcare system and system shocks, including workforce capacity and availability. At the community level, poverty and lack of awareness were critical contributors to poor access to SRH services. Assessing the target population’s knowledge, attitude, beliefs, and behavior and using health literacy principles for communication were fundamental for designing service delivery. Online resources for SRH services were an acceptable medium of information among young adults. In outbreak situations, SRH and pregnancy outcomes were improved by implementing laboratory surveillance, free-of-cost contraceptive services, improved screening through professional training, and quality of care. In addition, mobile health clinics were reported to be effective in remote areas. Knowledge Contribution. In outbreaks, the interventions are categorized into preoutbreak, during, and postoutbreak periods. The proposed steps can help to improve and do course correction in emergencies. Though conducted before the COVID-19 crisis, the authors believe that lessons can be drawn from the paper to understand and mitigate the impact of the pandemic on sexual and reproductive health services.
Thought these will be of interest to you. Feel free to share it among your networks. Best regards Moazzam

Webinar 15 Sept: Launching the family planning data toolkit for DMPA-SC self-injection
Beth Balderston
Launching the family planning data toolkit for DMPA-SC self-injection
Wednesday, September 15, 2021 8:30–10:00 AM EST | 12:30–2:00 PM GMT | 3:30–5:00 PM EAT
The PATH-JSI DMPA-SC Access Collaborative (AC) invites you to a virtual launch and walk-through of the redesigned DMPA-SC Country Data Dashboard and new monitoring, learning, and evaluation (MLE) tools.
The AC data dashboard is an interactive tool that presents available data collected during DMPA-SC self-injection (SI) introduction and scale-up. The dashboard visualizes SI uptake, tracks implementation of key policies, and integrates data use practices to support data-driven decision making. Information presented on the dashboard has changed over time to reflect shifting needs of stakeholders. After undergoing a human centered design exercise to better understand information needs surrounding SI introduction and scale-up, the Access Collaborative recently redesigned the DMPA-SC Country data dashboard. This webinar will introduce new data available and demonstrate new features on the dashboard.
The webinar will also include an overview of the Access Collaborative’s new MLE toolkit developed to help meet the needs of ministries of health and implementing partners. This toolkit features three tools for dynamic decision-making: a data visualization principles guide, an Excel dashboard how-to guide, and a data use and indicators guide. The tools are primers in how to create dynamic and visually compelling SI program data displays (e.g., dashboards, presentations) that facilitate comprehension and use of SI data for family planning program decision-making. While the toolkit was developed with SI in mind, many of the principles could be applied to data visualization needs across family planning programs and methods.

Dear colleagues Hope you are staying well and keeping safe in these challenging times. This is to inform you that WHO published, on 01 September 2021, a Request for Proposals to conduct systematic reviews on impact of family planning on women’s health and socio-economic status.
Background: Investing in family planning is often positioned as a cost-effective intervention for enhancing maternal and child health, improving the social-economic status of women, and contributing to sustainable development globally. Available evidence suggests that family planning contributes to improved women’s health by reducing unintended and high risk pregnancies and therefore the number of women at risk of a maternal death or maternal morbidity; and to contribute to women’s social-economic status by enabling girls to stay in school longer, achieve higher education levels and participate in employment that increases their earning power. Although there is broad consensus in the public health community about the evidence linking healthy timing and spacing of births to improved child health, some still consider the evidence linking family planning to women’s health, survival and socio-economic status as weak or lacking, raising concerns about the relative returns on investments in family planning programs. Thus WHO is interested in supporting an assessment of the magnitude and quality of evidence on existence and strength of relationship(s) between family planning use, and women’s health outcomes, women’s socio-economic status, and sustainable development.
The Request for Proposals is published on the United Nations Global Market website: https://www.ungm.org/Public/Notice/140847
Please share it widely among your networks.
