Call: contribute to the WHO Global Competencies for FP and Comprehensive Abortion Care
Carolin Ekman
This is an urgent call to contribute to finalizing the WHO Global Competencies for Family Planning and Comprehensive Abortion Care at Primary Health Care Level. · Family Planning and/or · Comprehensive Abortion Care. We are specifically interested in people with the following profiles: · experience in education · experience in competencies in SRHR We welcome SRHR participants from all regions, but especially look for additional participants from the WHO regions of Western Pacific, the Americas and Eastern Mediterranean.
What are competencies for FP and CAC?
Competencies are the abilities of a person to integrate knowledge, skills and attitudes in their performance of tasks in a given context. These Competencies are based on work done by WHO over the last 10 years. They specify what a competent person should be able to do in the workplace. They include the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that are needed. These 60 competencies are divided into 10 domains:
Each competency lists the knowledge and behaviours that are required. The competencies are useful for designing training and continuing professional development, for specifying what is needed to gain a qualification, for recruitment and for managing staff performance. Photo credit: Annie Spratt About this Delphi study This Delphi study brings together a large panel of experts who reflect the global diversity of contexts in SRHR work in family planning and comprehensive abortion care at primary health care level. The Delphi process helps the panelists to reach a consensus on the Competencies, through 3 successive rounds of responses, analysis, revision, and re- evaluation. We expect it to require about 1 day in total (about 3 hours for round 1; about 2 hours for round 2; about 1 hour for round 3), over 2 months. We already started Round 1 in September and it will last one more week until the 10/10/21.
We would like to draw on your expertise as a panel member with diverse experience, geographical spread and representing diverse points of view.
Please participate in this Delphi Study, conducted by Cambridge Professional Development Ltd (on behalf of the WHO), by providing your contact details in: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Y79D5P7
Or contact by email at Delphi@... and please provide a brief description of your relevant experience and background, geographical location and an email address to contact you with the Delphi study link. The Delphi process itself will be anonymous.

Call for tools on experience of newborn care
Annie Portela
Dear Colleague,
The Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing (MCA) from the World Health Organization has commissioned a scoping review in order to better understand and standardize the different dimensions of experience and satisfaction with newborn care. A paper will be developed that compiles and summarizes measurement tools and indicators that can help guide research and action for respectful care of newborns.
While efforts have been placed towards improving women and newborns’ experience of care and to ensuring respectful person-centered care during childbirth, there is still no agreement on what constitutes the experience of newborn care. This review will build on the extensive work done to capture women’s experiences during maternity care and will complement it by assessing tools and indicators to measure experience of newborn care, and satisfaction with care during the postnatal period. If you are aware of any literature, including academic articles, white papers, (project) reports, measurement tools or topic guides, etc., covering issues related to experience of or satisfaction with newborn care, including mistreatment of the newborn, please share the electronic file with us. We are looking for materials that were published after 2010.
For more information on the review and the concepts under study, you can access the full protocol by clicking here. Please also share this email with your colleagues. Deadline: 20th October 2021 Thank you for your collaboration. We will be happy to share the background paper with you once the scoping review has been completed.
Kind regards, Nicole Minckas

New Survey Deadline! HRH2030 Adolescent Family Planning Provider Competencies
Erin Seiler
*Following on my earlier email, we have now extended the end date of our survey requesting feedback to the Adolescent Family Planning Competencies for another week, to gather additional input. Please see below for a brief summary, and to participate in the survey, click on the link provided below, by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2021.*
Dear fellow Family Planning advocates and practitioners,
I am writing to you on behalf of the USAID-funded HRH2030 Program (www.hrh2030program.org) , which has been collaborating with USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH) in Washington to build upon World Health Organization (WHO) adolescent competencies and several global efforts, to provide easily accessible and actionable competencies for family planning service providers. Insufficient awareness of unequal power dynamics, social norms, and unconscious bias with regards to age can result in poor accessibility, acceptability, and lower quality family planning services. However, with increased understanding of adolescent development and reproductive health and rights, providers can offer more responsive services to adolescent clients, providing information and education about puberty, sexual reproductive health and reproductive rights, and access to contraceptive services. Improved provider competence in service delivery for adolescents can result in reduced unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions, voluntary and informed decisions about family planning needs, improved reproductive health outcomes and overall wellbeing.
To ensure that the content of the HRH2030 “Adolescent Family Planning Provider Competencies” document reflects the needs and experiences of adolescents, HRH2030 is seeking to gather anonymous feedback from youth and FP service providers to understand if the competencies we have developed are logical and understandable, what may be any gaps, and gather good examples of applying adolescent competencies.
We are reaching out to family planning and youth organizations like yours to kindly request that you share this document throughout your network, specifically targeting the following individuals in countries supported by USAID in Africa and Asia (excluding India, due to IRB restrictions) to provide feedback:
If you would like to participate in a follow up focus group discussion about these competencies, please provide your consent and information on this link to our sign-in page. This page can be accessed at the end of the online survey as well. *Note that the Adolescent Family Planning Provider Competencies resource is currently only available in English.
Thank you for your consideration of our request, and for your participation. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Questionnaire on unintended pregnancy for 2022 State of the World Population report
#invitation
Jennie Greaney
Dear IBP colleagues
The subject of the 2022 State of World Population report is unintended pregnancy. We know that statistics alone do not capture the full picture and are keen to capture also real-world experiences. We are looking for quotes and voices from people around the world who have experienced circumstances that can contribute to unintended pregnancy (lack of information, lack of privacy, lack of empowerment and agency, etc.).
To collect these voices and quotes, we have put together an anonymous questionnaire, which we are asking you to kindly share with your trusted colleagues, partners, networks, advocacy groups, activists, etc.
Please note these questions are highly sensitive. We urge friends and partners to share the questionnaire only with individuals able to give informed consent and able to respond in an environment that allows for total confidentiality. If individuals require assistance responding to the questionnaire, please ensure support is provided in a manner that respects their privacy and safety.
Links to the surveys here in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian. We are hoping to have all responses in by 29 October 2021.
Many thanks for your support and looking forward to sharing the report in 2022 with all our IBP partners! Jennie

New Resource: DISC Self-Inject Insights Synthesis from Evidence-Based Design
Claire Cole
Dear IBP Community,
We are pleased to share a new resource from the Delivering Innovations in Self Care (DISC) project. The resource “Highlights: Insights Synthesis—Insights Gained Through Evidence-Based Design”:
·
· Adopts a user-journey approach to distill factors influencing women’s movement from awareness of self-inject to intent, use, continuation, and advocacy. · Focuses on women’s experiences and needs, as well as those of the public and private sector actors on whom they rely. · Works to highlight design and implementation opportunities, as well as potential areas for pause and/or further investigation.
We hope this resource will prove useful to our formidable community of peers working to advance self-care as a cornerstone of SRH care.
With warm wishes, Claire Cole

INTERNATIONAL SAFE ABORTION DAY: TURNING THE CHALLENGES OF COVID-19 INTO OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION, INNOVATION AND KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE
Photo credit: Katia Amado/Pathfinder Mozambique As the pandemic continues to challenge health systems capacity for delivering essential services, International Safe Abortion Day is an opportunity to celebrate global efforts to protect ongoing provision of comprehensive abortion care. This web story from WHO and HRP demonstrates inspiring examples of how the challenges of the pandemic can be turned into opportunities for innovation and collaboration, across borders and organisations – including the role that the IBP Platform and the communities of practice on this space can play in this process! It highlights many of the principles that IBP seeks to promote: partnership, reduction of duplication, the use of digital solutions for SRHR knowledge sharing, and global dialogue for local impact.

Please respond: UNFPA Global Gender and Innovation Mapping by 15 Oct 2021
Sylvia Wong
Dear IBP Friends,
UNFPA invites you to participate in a global Gender and Innovation Mapping, open through Friday, 15 October 2021.
Innovations that promote gender equality are happening around the world. Our aim is to better understand this landscape and determine the role of innovation in promoting gender equality and women and girls' empowerment. The innovations can be new or novel approaches, models, services, or products that not only solve pain points for women and girls, but those with women and girls leading the creation of their own solutions. We want to identify where and how these innovations are being developed, and draw lessons from these experiences.
We are keen to identify examples that are both mission-critical to UNFPA's mandate (e.g., addressing GBV and harmful practices, supporting sexual and reproductive health bodily autonomy and decision-making, etc.), and also those that are crucial (e.g., financial inclusion, digital literacy, the care economy, smart use of tech, etc.) for achieving SDG 5 (Gender Equality).
Your participation matters. Please participate and share the SURVEY with your networks and partners (especially any implementing partners/counterparts, start-ups, social enterprises, female founders you might work with). We anticipate the survey will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
The SURVEY is open through Friday, 15 October 2021 (12:59 pm EST).
Your engagement will help highlight innovations around the world, the collaboration between innovators and the entities that support them, and the insights needed to enhance our gender programming and spark potential opportunities for partnerships. My hope is that the review will be a useful resource for us all, and feel free to reach out if you have questions and suggestions.
Thank you and best regards, Sylvia Sylvia Wong Innovation Coordinator UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund 605 Third Avenue New York, New York 10158 ![]()
