The Regional Task Force for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality invites you to the launch of the Interagency Strategic Consensus for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity: Strategic Directions for the Decade 2020-2030

ideas42 is a leading non-profit behavioral design lab that leverages rigorous research from the fields of behavioral economics, cognitive science, and psychology to address a range of social problems and improve millions of lives. We use the behavioral sciences to help us understand the nuances of human behavior and why people make the decisions they do. Our deep expertise across a range of domains has showed us that context matters, that asking the right questions is critical, and that simple solutions are often available, but frequently overlooked or dismissed. We work to identify the subtle but important contextual details that can have a disproportionate impact on outcomes. ideas42 has developed a rigorous methodology to identify behavioral barriers that inhibit people from acting in accordance with their own broader preferences, and to design tailored solutions to overcome those barriers. We also educate thought leaders, policy-makers and practitioners about behavioral science, and how it can help to solve social problems. We run bespoke education programs to provide an introduction to the design of behaviorally informed policies, programs and products, and work extensively with partners to develop in-house behavioral capacity through our Behavioral Design Teams. Our work spans more than 45 countries and encompasses global and domestic health, economic mobility, international development, education, consumer finance, criminal justice, and energy efficiency, which enables us to draw insights from a wide range of sectors. Within our global health portfolio, we have partnered with a wide range of governments, foundations, and non-profit organizations in the areas of family planning, and maternal and child health, nutrition, HIV, and malaria. We bring expertise in applied behavioral science, innovative approaches to co-design and capacity building, and a management approach to support diffusion of innovation at scale. WHO & HIFA: Maintaining essential health services during the pandemic: Deep dive, 10 May-25 June 2021
Neil Pakenham-Walsh
Dear colleagues at IBP,
HIFA invites you to join our forum in readiness for a major thematic discussion in collaboration with WHO, starting 10 May.
We shall be exploring in depth on how to maintain essential health services during the pandemic: reproductive health, child health, mental health, non-communicable diseases, surgery, emergency care, care for those who are vulnerable. These explorations will unfold on the HIFA discussion forums (English, French, Portuguese, Spanish) week by week over 6 weeks, guided by an expert working group of representatives of WHO and other organisations.
Throughout the discussion we are keen to hear from IBP members about maintaining essential reproductive health services. Has COVID-19 disrupted the provision of services in your country or facility? What has been the impact of such disruptions on service delivery and health outcomes? What approaches have helped (or might help) to address these issues?
Our reference document is the official WHO guidance (2020): Maintaining essential health services: operational guidance for the COVID-19 context interim guidance (June 2020). https://www.who.int/publications-detail-redirect/WHO-2019-nCoV-essential-health-services-2020.1
If you are not already a HIFA member, please join today in readiness for the discussions!

Research dissemination webinar: Valuing women's leadership to improve maternal and child health in West Africa: the case of Bajenu Gox in Senegal.
Ermel Johnson <jermel@...>
Save the date: 4 May 2021, from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm
Research dissemination webinar on: Valuing women's leadership to improve maternal and child health in West Africa: the case of Bajenu Gox in Senegal
Webinar description:
Decision-making at the family level in a context of socio-cultural constraints is a limiting factor and requires more attention in community-based interventions.
In many West African cultures, women are the custodians of customs and ensure its implementation even if they do not always participate in decision-making. This position and the powers vested in women vary between cultures. In Senegalese culture, the Bajenu Gox, who is the ‘godmother of the neighbourhood’, plays this role.
By Ministerial Order No. 7507 MSP DS-DSR dated 24 August 2010, President Abdoulaye WADE set up a national programme to promote the Bajenu Gox as a social mediator in the communities.
As part of the Canadian initiative Innovation for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (ISMEA), IPDSR/UCAD in collaboration with the NGO AcDev conducted implementation research from 2015 to 2020 on the role of the Bajenu Gox in improving the health of mothers and children and on models for their sustainability and motivation. At the end of the project's implementation, the edifying results allow us to describe the profile of the Bajenu Gox, its contribution to the health system in Senegal and the strategies for the sustainability of the associations and the care of the Bajenu Gox.
Thus, the webinar aims to share Senegal's experience in developing female leadership that can enable community health actors in other countries to identify community actors with roles and powers similar to those of the Bajenu Gox and build community interventions.
NB: English and Portuguese Interpretation will be provided.

Are you a policy-maker or programme managers interested in supporting the development of an implementation guide for home-based records?
Annie Portela
The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are collaborating to strengthen implementation of home-based records. An implementation guide to support countries in reviewing their home-based records is under development; Fuse ForeSight will be supporting the development process.
As part of this effort, we are seeking policy-makers and programme managers of MNCH, nutrition or vaccine programmes who would like to contribute to the development of simple decision-making tools that would allow country actors to assess the current content of their home-based record as well as operational support by reflecting on some simple questions such as:
Your input will involve providing feedback during short zoom calls that we are planning over the next 6 months.
If you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions, please contact Rich Radka (rich@...).
Many thanks in advance for your contribution.
