Dear Self-Care Champion,
The
Global Advocacy & Communications Working Group (GAC) of the Self-Care Trailblazer Group (SCTG) is excited to share the
Self-Care for UHC Advocacy Toolkit. The aim of this Toolkit is to equip self-care champions with the resources to effectively advocate for the inclusion of self-care in health systems and within universal
health coverage (UHC). The Toolkit is available in
English,
French, and
Spanish.
Why was the Toolkit developed?
Since the inception of the SCTG, we’ve heard from self-care champions that one of the greatest challenges facing advocates is that too few people understand
what self-care is and the valuable role it plays within UHC. We heard you and worked with our GAC members to develop tools that can support you in your outreach to donors, influencers, policymakers, and other key stakeholders.
Who is the intended audience of the Toolkit?
This Toolkit is for anyone looking to engage in the self-care movement! Advocates, health workers, resource mobilizers, communications professionals,
and others can use these tools to spread the word to donors, policymakers, global influencers, and other key stakeholders who have the power to influence UHC policies, programming, funding, and support for self-care. The tools have been developed by SCTG members
from around the world and can be adapted to be used in different countries and used in global advocacy.
What is included in the Toolkit?
- Messaging
Framework: Developed for a general audience and eight stakeholder groups, the Framework provides tailored messages on how self-care addresses a problem each group is facing, the impact of self-care in addressing that problem, and what they can do
to support and advance self-care.
- Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ) About Self-Care: This tool aims to dispel myths and address confusion about self-care and is intended to provide self-care champions with answers to tough questions, common concerns, and address misconceptions.
- Common
Self-Care Terms: Self-care can mean different things to different people. This tool ensures self-care champions have a common set of terms and a shared language when talking about self-care. The definitions focus on how people practice self-care
and are aligned with the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines on Self-Care Interventions for Health and Well-Being.
- Policy
Brief Template: This tool is designed for country-level advocates working to advance scaling up of self-care in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. It contains crucial information on self-care and the impact it can have on health systems. Advocates
can tailor the brief to each country’s specific needs, context, and target audience.
The toolkit also features additional resources such as the
SCTG Brochure and the
Infographic on Self-Care and UHC, which illustrates the relationship between advancing self-care and strengthening health systems for all.
Help us spread the word!
Please forward this announcement to your networks and share these tools on your social media channels tagging @selfcare4UHC and using #selfcare4UHC. And of course, we encourage you to use these resources in your communications, advocacy, and outreach. Once
you do, we want to hear from you! Please fill out this survey
to share your experience with using these tools. Your feedback will help us continue to improve and expand the content of the Toolkit and identify additional resources to help advance self-care and UHC.

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or want to get more involved in global advocacy and communications for self-care and UHC.
Best regards,
The GAC Leadership Team
