The new Digital Adaptation Kit (DAK) for Family Planning supports countries implementing WHO contraception and family planning
recommendations in their digital systems.
Digital Adaptation Kits, known as DAKs, are a critical layer in WHO’s
SMART Guidelines approach to making global guidance more effective across all areas of health
and wellbeing.
As countries increasingly invest in digital technologies for health system strengthening, and COVID-19 further accelerates the rise of digital health, DAKs ensure that people – both implementers and users
– remain at the heart of the digital journey.
The DAK for Family Planning was
developed by
WHO, HRP, UNFPA, JSI, and
PATH. At WHO, it was jointly led by the Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (SRH),
including the United Nations Special Programme HRP, and the Department of Digital Health and Innovation (DHI).
This DAK uses the algorithms developed from the medical eligibility for contraceptive methods and the WHO
MEC app. It also addresses the broader spectrum of quality of care, including screening, testing and counselling for choosing and managing contraceptive methods, care and support for survivors of intimate partner and sexual violence, and considerations
for adolescent well-being and promoting self-care interventions to ensure quality of care remains at the heart of the digital journey.

The DAK for antenatal care (ANC) launched earlier this year, and the approach is being expanded to other health domains. DAKs for HIV and
STIs are forthcoming, and DAKs for immunizations, postnatal care (PNC), child health, and self-care interventions are in development. Learn more about the SMART Guideline approach
