Female genital cutting & Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights

Dear Colleague,

In honor of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Cutting on February 6th, CHANGE, Orchid Project, Advocates for Youth, ICRW, and The U.S. Network to End FGM/C are delighted to share with you our newly updated 2021 fact sheet that includes the latest research and information about female genital cutting (FGC).

The 2021 Female Genital Cutting (FGC) fact sheet provides a vital update that explains the practice of FGC, describes where and why it happens, and lists the devastating impacts that the practice has on the health of women and girls. FGC is a form of gender-based violence and is a violation of the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls globally.

This new resource also includes data about FGC in emergency situations and describes how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted women and girls either at risk of undergoing the practice, or those who have already been cut.

CHANGE and Orchid Project have also co-authored an op-ed entitled: Biden’s Support for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Must Include Female Genital Cutting that has been published in Medium. This op-ed explains the specific ways in which the Biden-Harris administration can support communities in ending all forms of gender-based violence, including FGC, while also providing competent sexual and reproductive healthcare for the millions of women and girls who have been cut domestically and globally.

As our partners and we welcome President Biden’s new administration to office, we recognize the need to capitalize on the momentum and spirit of the moment to better protect women and girls, both in the United States and abroad. We hope that, equipped with the information in these new resources, you will join us as a vital partner in the movement to end FGC and secure the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls both domestically and internationally.

To join in the global discussion around FGC this week, we invite you to share these resources widely and tweet one or both of the messages below:
